LINQ: Creating your first Extension Method
Sep 22, 2005
I thought I would take a second and post how you can create your own Extension Method. An extension method is a specially defined method that acts like a method defined on a type. LINQ operators, like from, where, select, etc are implemented using extension methods. For example, the where clause checks for a Boolean result of a test (ex: City==”London”). Creating your first extension method To show this in action, I want to create my own custom extension method.…more
LINQ: What is the purpose of var?
Sep 22, 2005
Larsenal, a C9’er posted a comment on the C9 forums about the Introducing LINQ video and asked a really good question so I thought I should repost my response here. **Larsenal’s Question **“_I’ve watched this video on LINQ in C#. If the type is set at compile time, what’s the benefit of using the “var” keyword? It seems like it just makes the code less readable. I look at the first example here, and wonder why not just replace the var with string[]?…more

The One LINQ Document You Need to Read
Sep 15, 2005
…is now available on MSDN as an HTML page, the LINQ Project Overview. Huge thanks to Don and Anders (and the many, many others that contributed to this doc) as I think it’s really the best overview of all of the LINQ capabilities. Read it, study it, love it. We’re passing out about 5,000 printed copies of this at PDC for attendees :)
Announced at PDC: The LINQ Project
Sep 13, 2005
The LINQ Project On Tuesday September 13, 2005, Anders Hejlsberg did the first public demo of the LINQ Project in the Jim Allchin keynote. **What is LINQ you might ask? ** LINQ stands for Language INtegrated Query and in a nutshell, it makes query and set operations, like SQL statements first class citizens in .NET languages like C# and VB. Query expressions, like “from”, “where”, and “select” and all the others you know and love from SQL are now first class citizens in C# and VB.…more
