New MSDN TV episodes on Generic APIs, ADO.NET 2.0, and ASP.NET
May 03, 2004
Lots of good quality MSDN shows for your viewing pleasure: Scott Guthrie on Data with ASP.NET in Visual Studio 2005 Pablo Castro provides a First Look at ADO.NET 2.0 Krzysztof Cwalina on the new Generic APIs in the .NET Framework 2.0 Footnote: For those of you paying close attention, these used to be part of the “Whidbey Chronicles” MSDN series, but since VS 2005 was officially announced, we’re not supposed to use “Whidbey” anymore, in fact we changed the old shows to be “Visual Studio 2005”).…more
Eric on Channel9, Shaykat on Blogs
Apr 30, 2004
Eric Gunnerson is on Channel9, discussing: How do you design new features for C#? What has been the biggest change at Microsoft since you’ve been here? Shaykat blogs about our spoken word blog session. I’m still laughing, I personally think we need to find an open mic poetry beatnik coffee house.
Upcoming Events

VS Connections (April 18-21) Is anyone going to VS Connections in Orlando next week? I’ll be there, it should be lots of fun. I’m trying to cook up some fun demos for my talk on What’s new with the C# IDE. **Bay.NET User Group (April 27) **I’ll also be speaking at the Bay.NET user group on what’s coming in C# 2.0 thanks to all-around good guy and C# rock star, Juval Lowy.…more
Changes to C# and .NET Framework
Apr 01, 2004
Eric points out some of the new syntax changes we’ve made in C# 2.0 for FCLC compliance. These changes could break some of your existing code so you should make sure to verify 1.1 code when moving to VS 2005 (Whidbey). You should also be aware of the new BCL changes that will help developers write decent and non-offensive code, including changes to System.String and a new exception class. System.String…more
More coverage on C# 2.0 features
Mar 29, 2004
Juval has a great article in this month’s MSDN magazine on iterators, anonymous methods and partial types. Note: You can see Juval present on all the C# 2.0 features at VS Connections in Orlando. Grant Richin’s also has some great posts on Anonymous Methods and Iterators that are worthing printing and studying :)
JetBrains ReSharper
Feb 26, 2004
JetBrains, the creators of the IntelliJ IDEA Java development tool, have an early release version of a Visual Studio .NET add-in for C# called ReSharper. You can learn more about ReSharper by viewing Luke Hutteman’s and Michael Yuan’s blog posts to get their first impressions. ReSharper is currently in the early access program, so you should be able to download and test drive for yourselves. It would be interesting to see how these compare against other add-ins that provide refactoring in Visual Studio like:…more

Visualizer Heaven
Feb 20, 2004
One of the features that I’m most looking forward to in Visual Studio “Whidbey” is visualizers. As you can see (no pun intended) in the XML visualizer above, visualizers are a useful and very powerful way to help debug applications, but how does one actually create a custom visualizer? Good News, ScottNo blogged on how you can create your own custom visualizers! Definitely check it out, and send Scott your requests/ideas for other visualizers…more
Good Question on WMA support for Windows Forms
Feb 19, 2004
J. Daniel Smith in the comments to my last post writes: " _Why doesn’t the new Sound control support WMA files? (Yes, I know it’s just a wrapper around the Win32 control…) _ But still, this “mixed messaging” from Microsoft is a bit annoying at times: use WMA (and not MP3)…unless you want to embed it in your application, then you have to use WAV." Response: Very good questions, and I have to give a good response to someone with “Daniel” in their name:) You are correct, the sound control does not support wma files (or MP3 file for that matter).…more
Embedding sound files into a Windows app (Whidbey)
Feb 19, 2004
I have to confess: I’ve been coding again…its my one escape from the 104 flagged emails that need responses or large amounts of work done, and the as-yet uncovered firedrills which I’m sure are just one Outlook-sync away. For now, I blog… Recipe: Embed a sound file that will play when a Windows form application is loaded. Pre-cooking steps Open Whidbey M2 PDC (or greater) Create a new Windows Form application Have Solution Explorer and the Properties Window visible in Visual Studio Step 1 - Add and Embed your resource…more
